On 28th October 2020, the Republic of Korea in Uganda donated COVID-19 protective assortments to the Cooperative Medical Center and to 9 other medical centers owned by the Health Cooperative. The Kampala Medical and Allied health workers Cooperative society was established July 2019 with support from Uganda Cooperative Alliance.
UCA supported the Health Cooperative to setup an office at UCA headquarters in Kampala. The Health cooperative is comprised of doctors and health works from within the central region with a vision to spread across the country.
UCA – General Secretary – CPA Ivan Asiimwe thanked the Korean government through the embassy for the great support to the cooperative movement in Uganda he also hailed the International Cooperative Agricultural Organization and the National Agricultural Federation of Korea for supporting UCA team to attend ICA- global a meeting in Brazil in 2018 where the team got knowledge of forming a health cooperative. It is through that exposure that UCA was able to replicate the Health Cooperative Model in Uganda.
During the ceremony, the state Minister for Cooperatives Hon. Fredrick Gume appreciated the role of UCA in supporting the Doctors and health workers in starting up a health cooperative in Uganda. He highlighted how cooperatives are vital bring about economic development. He was proud at the increased number of cooperatives from 18,000 cooperative societies to 21,000 registered cooperatives in Uganda.
Ms. Jungok Shin, the Second Secretary from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, recognized the role of UCA in supporting the establishment of the Cooperative Medical Center. She thanked the Health Cooperative for providing free medical assistance to communities ever since the outbreak of COVID-19. The embassy donated Jerrycans of sanitizers, gloves, Masks, Juice and hand washing equipment’s to the Medical Center.
